In October we were excited to learn that our Contracts Director, Bob Gaskell, would serve as the next President of the HEA.
A strong motivator, we just knew Bob would be perfect for the job. Since he has been overwhelmed by the number of people who joined us in our enthusiasm and rushed to share well wishes and messages of support. If you were one of the many that took the time to send their congratulations - we thank you.
Bob has pledged to fulfil the role to the best of his abilities in what is a challenging time for the industry and country as a whole; with the UK economy damaged by the Covid-19 pandemic and new trading regulations coming into force post-Brexit. Of course, he would have liked to have celebrated his new post traditionally, we are all missing the advantages of our networking events, however for members that would
like to learn more about their new leader and his plans for the year ahead, we’ve put together the below spotlight on Bob - with a quick-fire Q&A:
What key qualities do you believe you bring to the HEA?
I've been described as a dog with a bone; I believe I possess the grit and determination to get things done.
What is the HEA's vision for 2021?
A lot is out of our hands, but we hope to get things back to normal as swiftly as possible so that all the planned events for the second half of the year will go ahead as per norm.
Are there any changes you wish to implement?
I plan to streamline some procedures for members and re-focus on the fact that the HEA was created for the members by the members; sometimes, this core objective can be lost.
What did your first 30-days as President look like?
Like most of the population, working from home and attending virtual meetings during lockdown I am afraid.
Last year was the first-ever virtual AGM - how is this continued period of uncertainty continuing to impact the HEA's plans?
The HEA, like many trade associations, relies heavily on networking; COVID has severely hampered this core element. We have had to quickly get used to online platforms and new ways to keep in contact with each other – it has been interesting!
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
Longevity at CU. I've been here for over 21 years now.
And the question that's on everyone's lips... will there be an annual conference this year?
I truly hope so!
